Carpet Cleaning with a Rug Doctor
I do not recommend cleaning a carpet with a Rug Doctor for most people.
As a professional carpet cleaner there are major flaws in the Rug Doctor process.
The Rug Doctor process is to put hot water and soap into the machine. Then spray the soapy water on the carpet and suck it back up with a little agitation provided by the brush on the machine. This machine has much less suction than most commercial machines and with most operators does not suck up enough of the water.
Improving the Rug Doctor Processes
First, take your time and really do a triple vacuum of your carpet. This will improve the results of your cleaning a lot. Be sure to put a fresh bag in your vacuum or empty the dirt cup. Vacuum North/South, South/North, East/west, west/east. Vacuums do most of the dirt removal on the back stroke. Pull the vacuum SLOWLY back.
Buy a pumpup sprayer. Mix the soap by putting in four to 10 ounces per gallon of water. More soap for dirtier carpet. Spray the soap/water mix on the carpet. Spray more on the spots and traffic lanes. One Gallon of water/soap mix should do a two bedroom apartment.
If you have a clean push broom with stiff bristles use it to agitate the soap/water on your spots and traffic lanes. Now let the soap dwell on the carpet while you set up your Rug Doctor. The Dwell time should be from ten to 20 minutes before you start to rinse the carpet.
Only add Hot water to your Rug Doctor. You will also want to put a little defoamer in the recovery tank. Now clean the carpet with the Rug Doctor. You will want to make one wet pass pulling the RD backwards while holding down the button. Then you will want to make two or three dry passes to try to get as much water up as possible.
That is the best job you can do with a Rug Doctor. A good professional carpet cleaner will usually have better agitation, better chemicals, and better suction to get more water out of the carpet.
For $80 to $200 you can have a professional come and clean your carpets. You will probably spend $50 or more to rent, buy a pump up sprayer and buy chemicals on the do it yourself deal.
