Microsoft Excel came out with its 12th version in 2007, with the aptly-named Microsoft 2007. The software has come a long way since its first release for the Mac in 1985.
The basic look and feel of Excel remains about the same. Likes predecessors such as Lotus 1-2-3 and Visicalc, Excel is a spreadsheet program. A spreadsheet is constructed of rows and columns, together making up thousands (or millions) of tiny cells. Into each cell you can type numbers, alphanumeric data (text + numbers) or formulas. Every time you update one cell, the entire spreadsheet is automatically recalculated.
Microsoft offesr a number of excellent free tutorials on their website, which are great for answering general questions you may have. However, for more specific tutorial advice, you are going to want a resource that leads you step by step through only the most important material. After all, the typical Microsoft tutorial/reference book is 1,000 pages long – much too long to read through for the average person.
