Going boating? Safetey and preparedness are the best policies before you head out on the water. Here are some pointers for the different parts of your boat:
GENERAL:
* Do a general cleaning of hull, deck and topside
* Clear drains and scuppers
* Apply wax to your boat
* Clean and polish your boat’s metal parts
* Clean and oil your teak
HULL
* Check for abrasions, scratches, gouges on your hull
* Replace zincs
* Look for blisters on your hull
* Check your rub rails for sturdiness
DECK, FITTINGS, SAFETY EQUIPMENT:
* Check stanchion, pulpits and lifelines for sturdiness
* Check ground tackle and lines
* Check chainplates and cleats
* Look at the hull/deck joint
BELOW DECKS:
* Check, test and lubricate your boat’s seacocks
* Check condition of all of your hoses and clamps
* Make sure that hoses below your waterline are double-clamped
* Check bilges pumps for operability
* Check for oil in your bilges
* Look at the limber holes to be sure they are clear of debris
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND COMPONENTS:
* Check your battery’s water level
* Recharge batteries, as needed
* Check your boat’s bonding
* Inspect all wiring
* Test all gauges
