House Training Adult Dog vs Training your Puppy

House training adult dog can be large in scope, complex in technique and rewarding to those who are successful at it.

You and your adult dog, depending on his breed, could have perhaps 10-12 good years.  The training environment must be controlled for training your older dog, especially if the dog you have was an outdoor dog and is being brought inside.  The adult dog is well past the discovery stage and chewing and gnawing stage.

Adult dogs can be great companions because their attention span is greater and they tend not to get as distracted as a puppy.  Because you are an adult and your dog is, too, both of you appreciate a more retiring environment than a young puppy would.  Because adult dogs have larger bladders and bowels, the older dog should be able to ’hold it’ longer than a young puppy would.

A Trainer’s Note for house training adult dog or any dog: I read an account of this young widow that did as her friends suggested:  She got an adult dog for companionship.  She stepped right in as trainer, read books, consulted on the Internet and visited the local vet and library in order to become a knowledgeable dog owner.  As her dog grew so did she.

Until one day, they were in session, he was performing well and earning food treats to reinforce desirable before.  Less than an hour later, her beloved dog collapsed, was rushed to the vet ER and later died.

The lady was devastated.  She insisted on an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.  The autopsy revealed her pet was diabetic.  The lady’s guilt was palpable.  She had been giving her dog treats with sugar and that brought on diabetic shock and subsequent death.

This could have been avoided by an initial evaluation at the vet, and rewarding with nutritious dog treats to positively reinforce desirable performance.
