Nail fungus (onychomycosis) is an infection of the nails that can affect both the hands and feet, but is certainly more prevalent on the feet. The fungus generally thrives in dark, moist environments, so when you consider that you wear shoes and socks all day, along with the perspiration that occurs, it ends up being a perfect environment for nail fungus.
The true, impossible to kill nail fungus, actually grows under the nail. As it reproduces, it forces the nail up and away from the nail bed and it then becomes thick and discolored, ranging in color from yellow to brown. It is not uncommon for the infection to then spread to the other healthy nails on your foot. Your toenail can actually fall off and, unfortunately, in most cases grow back the same way, if not properly treated with an effective toenail fungus remedy.
In addition to the unsightly appearance of the nail, other problems can also arise. Having nail fungus will make you more prone to developing athlete’s foot. Thick fungal nails can also be uncomfortable in closed shoes
.
Treatment is difficult because the fungus thrives in dark moist environments. Eliminating those factors can go a long way to reducing recurrence.
