The Pet Food Recall of Mid-March, 2007 peaked the interest in holistic canine food? Holistic means ‘all natural, no artificial colorings, flavorings, enzymes, sugar, salt or fillers of any kind.’ So, holistic canine food means: All natural dog food.
Many commercially-produced dog foods cannot make the claim that it is all natural. Since the pet food recall in 2007, there has been an enhanced interest in preparing holistic canine food. Dog owners expressed an interest in obtaining and/or preparing the holistic food that their pets need.
Many dry dog foods are made by grinding cornmeal, making a paste of cornmeal and water, and then dried under extreme high heat to make it ‘crunchy.’ Although harmful bacteria are destroyed at this stage of production, good bacteria (such as Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus acidophilus which help humans digest and assimilate our food) are destroyed as well. The physical manifestation of this lack of good bacteria results in ear, eye or yeast infections.
There are many ways for owners to incorporate holistic canine food into dog’s diets. It can literally and figuratively change the lives of dogs and their families.
Following the 03/16/07 recall, some of the biggest names in the $15 billion commercial dog food business were upended. Dog foods were again pulled from retailers’ shelves. The contamination was causing severe, and often fatal, kidney problems which were causing dogs and to die.
Early lab reports said the recalled foods contained a substance found in rat poison. The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center researched the independent tests based on animals affected. However, their tests did not agree with the initial reports from corporate labs.
Two weeks following the initial recall, the Food and Drug Administration did confirm the plastics ingredient melamine with cyan uric acid, and wheat gluten were in the vials of the tainted samples. With the cooperation of veterinary, diagnosticians, poison control technicians, governmental authorities and corporate laboratories cooperated to convey accurate, timely, and life-saving information to owners.
