Can a wetting puppy be stopped? Can “that smell” that greets you at the door be eliminated? If puppy wetting has got you down, you are in luck.
Let me tell you my story,
I have a little Dachshund that was ruining my carpet and my sanity with her constant wetting. It got so bad that my wife had said “either that dog stops wetting or it finds a new home”. Pretty strong words but I new she wasn’t kidding. My wife loves her new carpet, and no matter what we did to keep the dog off of it, she always managed to find a way to mark her spot. So I went to work on finding a cure. After much searching and weeding out of useless information, I found a few things that really helped. Things that I could implement immediately, things that started giving us the results we wanted.
THE SHORT LIST
Puppies need a lot of potty breaks
- 2 Months = every 2 hours
- 3 Months = every 4 hours
- 4 Months = every 5 hours
- 5 Months = every 6 hours
- 6 Months = every 7 hours
- 7 Months = every 8 hours
DOGS CAN SENSE THINGS
When you get angry with your dog for wetting inside it only makes things worse. A stern voice and a pointed finger is plenty to get you dogs attention. Don’t discipline your dog unless you catch them in the act, this only confuses your dog. In most cases your dog won’t know why it’s in trouble and the “guilty look” is merely submission.
KNOW YOUR DOG
This was a MAJOR help. Dogs are so different from breed to breed as well as from dog to dog. Only by observing your dog can you see the behavior patterns that will give hints to how you can help your dog.
FOR EXAMPLE
- Does your dog wet at a certain time of day? If so try and get her outside sooner
- Does your dog wet at night? Try crating your dog. Some people don’t like this but in some cases, like with smaller dogs, they like the crate. It gives them a sense of security.
- Does your dog wet when it gets excited? Do your best to prepare. Let friends and family know not to get your dog excited when they come over. What worked great for us is we tell everyone to ignore her at first whenever they come over, this did wonders.
SOUNDS SIMPLE
These tips may all sound simple but they can really help. Dogs love their owners and they really want to please them, so try and not get to frustrated about the wetting it’s not personal.
Hopefully you have found some help here, if you want even more help
it’s just a click away. My story ends, we still have the Dachshund it’s been a hard road but well worth it. So if a Dachshund can be trained to stop wetting any dog can, even your dog.
