puppy toilet trainingIf you are planning on getting a new puppy one of the first thing you should consider is puppy toilet training.

First of all decide where you want your puppy to go to the toilet.  If you have a garden, choose a suitable place in your garden for your puppy’s toilet area and make sure you take your puppy to the same area each time he wants to do his business.  It is important that your puppy is trained to use the same area each time, especially if you have children so you don’t end up with dogs mess all over your garden.  If possible it is best if you can choose an area that is a bit secluded and private for your puppy’s toilet area so he feels comfortable about going there.

You should take your puppy outside to his toilet area at regular intervals throughout the day.  Young puppies have weak bladders so you will need to take him to his toilet area every half hour or so. Also take him outside first thing in the morning and last thing at night.  Stay with your puppy and praise him when he does his business.

Be prepared for some accidents, they are bound to happen when your puppy is young.  If you catch your puppy in the act of relieving himself on the floor, simply scoop him up quickly and take him outside to his toilet area.  If you find your puppy has left a puddle on the floor it will be pointless to get angry and scold your puppy after the event.  He will not remember what he has done wrong and will wonder why he is being told off.

Always make sure you clean up any mess or puddles you puppy has made indoors thoroughly with cleaning products that will get rid of any odours.  If there are any lingering odours your puppy will sniff them out and will use the same area again to relieve himself.

Puppy crate training is another method you may wish to consider to help with toilet training your puppy.  Crate training can be very beneficial to you and your puppy.  When your puppy is used to his crate it will be a safe haven for him and a place where he can have a nice little nap without being disturbed.  Puppies do not like to soil the area where they sleep so he can be left in his crate overnight and this will help him control himself until you take him outside in the morining to his toilet area.

Puppy toilet training can be difficult at times and it does take a lot of time and patience.  But it is important and well worth the effort.  Once your puppy is toilet trained you will be pleased that you took the time and made the effort to toilet train him.
