Just got a new Puppy?
Are you feeling overwhelmed with house training, and how to take care of your puppy?
I was a new dog owner many years ago and had all the joy and frustration that comes with a new four-legged kid. Don’t be discouraged or overwhelmed because you CAN train your dog!
The first thing you need to remember is that your puppy is communicating with you at all times - but if you have never had a dog before, you may not understand what your pup needs or wants.
In addition, each dog has a different personality, so training is not one-size-fits-all. For some dogs, toys will be a big motivator, for others, it will be food, and for another personality type, positive touch (petting/stroking) will be the best way to train.
And there is no reason you can’t use all three depending on the situation. A note of caution: if you have a very excitable dog, don’t use something that would increase his/her energy level to the point of distraction – for example, food or treats.
Creating a positive and loving bond will give you the best foundation to train your dog. Your dog wants to please you and as the dog’s person, it is your responsibility to take care of this furry family member.
This means that no matter how angry you get, you should never strike your dog, or swear and yell at your puppy.
In obedience training you do need to speak commands in a strong voice, showing you are the leader, but if you yell at your dog, there will be negative consequences. And if you talk without authority you will confuse your pooch.
Overall if you create a bond and positive training, you will have less stress and frustration because you will have a happy trained dog with good manners!
