Do you have the Energy Bill Blues? Do you cringe every time you open one of your home heating bills? Saving Money by conserving energy is something that you owe to yourself to do and it has the added advantage of helping the environment.
I used to dread every time I opened my home heating oil bill because it was almost as much as my mortgage. It got to the point that we were paying for our oil on our charge cards. I knew that we couldn’t go through more winters like that. We had cut back on everything else we could and were still having a hard time with our home heating costs.
I started reading and researching ways that I could save money by conserving energy. I came up with a few simple things that over the course of the winter helped me to use one less tank of oil last year. That was a saving of over $800.00 because I was paying $3.19 a gallon for home heating oil last year.
By making a few simple, low cost measures I was keeping more energy in my home heating system. It wasn’t escaping into thin air or right into the oil company’s pocket. The most expensive part of the changes was the programmable thermostat.
Invest in a programmable thermostat. They really do help you to conserve energy. Of course, you have to be willing to conserve for it to work. You can set it up and forget about it unless there is a drastic change in the temperature. Set the temperature for a lower setting when you are going to sleep at night. The house does not have to be toasty warm when you are sleeping. That is a waste of energy. You can always throw on an extra blanket if you feel a little cool.
Get a blanket for your hot water heater and wrap those hot water pipes. You will be amazed at what a difference these two things make. The temperature in my boiler room dropped drastically after I did these two things. My hot water stays warmer and the heat goes right into my baseboard heating system without being lost.
