Does your dog ever growl or snap at you? Have you had a friends’ dog get aggressive with you? I ran across information on how a to train your dog and found several interesting websites. However, I was disturbed to read the following quote, “…Don’t act scared if your dog growls at you when you ask him to do things–just snarl back without touching him and stand your ground. Continue prodding him to obey you until he does.” From http://www.ehow.com/how-to_4845425_train-dog-yourself.html
First of all, if you have a dog that snarls at you, he/she may be telling you to stay away due to fear. The other reason could be aggression, which should be dealt with very carefully so you do not get hurt. I do know of people who adopt dogs and have experiences such as this.
It can be dealt with over a short amount of time by making the dog trust you. How? Easy – train your dog with yummy treats – at a distance if needed in the beginning. Put treats in every room of your house so you can reward good behavior and show you are someone to trust. Keep treats on you at all times – look for all good behavior and reward your furry friend. Call your dog to you and give a treat. If the dog is laying nicely beside you, give him/her a treat. You get the idea. Before long you’ll have the dog trained to be eating out of your hand (no pun intended):-)
Never get violent or mean with a dog – regardless of a growl, snarl or snap. And do NOT growl back and hold your ground – it will threaten the dog and will only make matters worse.
