If you are going to attempt to build a pole barn as do a do it yourself project with fanciful dreams of everything going well your best bet is to start with a genuine set of pole barn plans. If you don’t it may end up costing you more than you bargained for. Here are a couple of planning tips that will save you some grief and headaches.
1) Before you begin, think about the reasons for constructing the barn. What are your major needs? Do you need storage space, Stalls for animals or a place to park equipment?
2) Think about the location where you want to place the pole barn. Does it have easy access in or out. If you get a lot of rain will it be a problem? Is the area on level or uneven ground. Which direction will it face. This may be of concern due to winds whipping in or where the sun is setting or rising.
3) Be sure to call and find out where your phone lines, gas lines and well water lines (if you have any) are and have them marked out. This is a mistake that my wifes dad made when she was a kid when they put up a large pole barn and found the phone line with the posthole diggers… this was not a good thing… lol.
They did not think the phone lines were damaged at the time but, needless to say every time they got a good rain they went without a phone until everything dried up a little. For five years this went on until later her dad paid $1500 to repair a large part of the phone lines going around the barn to the house. I hope this helps make your pole barn plans project easier and not so costly.
