Younger Dogs will jump up on people for two reasons. One is to greet them and the other is to be at human level. Dominant dogs will be the hardest to train to stop jumping as they want to be equal to the human. While it is cute for the young puppy to run and jump up on people, the older stronger adult dog that hasn’t been taught not to jump can easily knock young children over and dirty people’s clothes.
Therefore, it is imperative to teach a young dog not to jump up on people for their safety and yours.Use the hands on approach. Typically, a young dog will run and greet it’s owner or guest and jump up on them. As the dog runs to you, spread your fingers apart and stick your hand out in front of you. When the dog gets to you, place your hand firmly in has face and say “down”. Dogs do not like their face to be covered or blocked. Repeat this action every time as your dog comes to you or guests. Consistency is the key. Soon, they will know this means not to jump, but to remain on all fours while greeting people.
