People have many and vaired options when it comes to choosing the next family pet. Some browse the classifieds in the local paper, others use the internet and some just visit the local pet shop. Perhaps the most helpful method to society is to adopt a dog from the local animal shelter.
By adopting a dog you can give a happy life to an animal that was otherwise a victim. It also has the added bonus of reducing the number of unwanted and homeless dogs in the area. Very few animal shelters are no kill these days so in all likelihood you are probably saving the dogs life as well.
The reasons above are probably the best reasons from an emotional and ethical point of view but there are some economical benefits from adopting a dog as well. Animal shelter dogs have had their shots, their temprament is already well known and the freed up space makes room for more dogs that have been neglected. Animal shelters have all their new dogs examined by a vet for diseases and parasites which is not often true of dogs being given away out of a box outside the shopping centre.
Dog shelters don’t just have strays. Dogs are given away for all sorts of reasons and often have dogs given to them by former owners. In these cases as much information as possible about the dog is recorded, such as whether it’s good with children, how much it barks, is it playful or obedient and other important details. Another advantage of adopting a dog is quite often they have already been housetrained.
Animal shelters are an important community service as stray dogs can be dangerous to children and adults. Most have little or no public funding or government support so they are limited as to how many dogs they can handle at a time. The only way to bring in more dogs is to remove ones they currently have. Quite often it’s managed by euthanasia. Obviously nobody likes this option so adopting a dog could very well save it’s life as well as that of another that takes it’s place at the animal shelter.
