The Spirit of Christmas

Christmas is a festive season where we all like to get together with our family and close friends to celebrate Christmas. Weather we call him Father Christmas, Santa Claus or St. Nichols he make us all feel like children at Christmas.
In Denmark the Christmas tradition is to celebrate Christmas Eve the 24th of December. Late in the afternoon you can hear the church bells ringing and in many areas of the city which sounded so beautiful.
When I was a kid my Dad would take me and my 3 other siblings to mass in a big church in the city. We were all dressed in our best cloth and being the youngest of four children I felt so proud to be walking there with them. We would have to catch the tramp to get there and I use to love this trip, it was dark and everywhere you looked there were Christmas light and decorations.
We would come into the big town square in the middle of Copenhagen and there in the middle of the square was a great big Christmas tree all lit up and festive looking.
The church was beautiful decorated for Christmas and there were several Christmas trees standing around. Looking through a kids eyes was like magic and when the Christmas carols started I almost expected the angels to appear somewhere in the church.
A beautiful smell of cooking greeted us when we arrived home and my Mother was busy in the kitchen get our Christmas dinner ready. We usually had a big pork roast served with red cabbage, little new potatoes turned in caramel, vegetable and the beautiful gravy.
For desert we had ris’a l’amande with cherry sauce and an almond was hidden in the dish and who ever got it received an almond present. After dinner we would dance around the Christmas tree and sing a few carols and then it was time to get the presents.
